Disease state awareness and how to stop overthinking

Welcome to the MedTech + Mindset Newsletter!

I've been thinking about advice for overthinkers, so there's two things to think about this edition.

Is It Time to Do Disease State Awareness with Patients?

Insight from Matt Tucker

Are you ready to take your medical device, digital therapeutic, or precision diagnostic to the next level? It's time to talk about disease state awareness campaigns and how they can help you get your product in front of the right people.

But hold your horses, because there's one thing you need to know before you start throwing money at patient-focused efforts: you need clinician support. That's right, without clinical support, you're wasting your hard-earned cash. So, before you start planning that flashy campaign, make sure you have the backing of the medical community.

If not, all the great education you’re going to spend money on is going to benefit the first line product in the treatment algorithm – not you.

Now, let's dive into what a disease state awareness campaign is all about. It's all about educating patients and healthcare professionals about a specific condition. When done right, it can increase awareness, improve diagnosis rates, and ultimately lead to better patient outcomes.

But how do you make your campaign stand out from the crowd? It all starts with understanding your target audience. Who are the patients most affected by your condition? What are their pain points? How can your product make their lives easier? Once you have a clear understanding of your audience, you can craft a message that resonates with them.

Next, you need to get creative with your campaign. Gone are the days of boring pamphlets and billboards. In today's world, you need to use all the tools at your disposal to reach your target audience. That means social media, online advertising, and even influencer marketing.

But don't forget about the healthcare professionals. They play a crucial role in the adoption of prescription-only medical products. That's why it's important to create educational materials that are tailored to their needs. Think webinars, case studies, and peer-to-peer discussions.

Finally, measure your success. Without data, you'll never know if your campaign was effective. Track website visits, engagement rates, and product sales. Use this information to refine your message and make improvements for the next campaign.

In conclusion, disease state awareness campaigns can be a powerful tool in the arsenal of medical device, digital therapeutic, and precision diagnostic companies. But, it's important to remember that without clinician support, any patient-focused efforts will be a waste of resources. So, make sure you have the backing of the medical community before diving headfirst into your campaign.

How Parkinson's Law Helps You Make Faster Progress

Insight from Matt Tucker

Do you find yourself struggling to complete projects on time or feeling like your work just keeps dragging on? Well, have no fear because Parkinson’s Law is here to help!

Parkinson’s Law states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. In other words, if you give yourself a week to complete a task, it will take a week. But if you give yourself two days to complete the same task, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get it done.

Now, you may be thinking, “But wait, aren’t we working in the medical field? Shouldn’t we take our time to ensure accuracy and safety?” Of course, accuracy and safety should always be a top priority, but that doesn’t mean we need to drag our feet and let projects take months or even years to complete.

By setting tighter deadlines and giving ourselves less time to complete tasks, we can actually increase our productivity and efficiency. This can help us bring life-saving medical devices to market faster and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

But how can we apply this concept to our work in medtech? Here are a few tips:

  1. Set clear deadlines: When starting a new project, set clear and realistic deadlines for each phase of the project. This will help keep you on track and give you a sense of urgency to get things done.
  2. Break tasks into smaller chunks: Instead of tackling a large project all at once, break it down into smaller tasks with their own deadlines. This will help prevent procrastination and make the project feel more manageable.
  3. Eliminate distractions: When working on a tight deadline, it’s important to eliminate any distractions that may derail your focus. Turn off your phone, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and let your coworkers know you’re not to be disturbed.

So there you have it, medtech innovators! By applying Parkinson’s Law to our work, we can increase productivity, efficiency, and ultimately help save more lives. Let’s get to work and make a difference!
