Are Technical Founders Setting Themselves Up For Failure?

Insight from Matt Tucker

Technical founders of medical device companies often make the mistake of thinking that their expertise in a specific field is all they need to succeed in the business world. But the truth is, there are several blind spots that these founders need to be aware of, and failing to address them could spell disaster for their company.

One of the biggest blind spots is the lack of business experience. Many technical founders may have a deep understanding of the science behind their device, but they may not have the necessary knowledge to navigate the complex world of business. This can lead to poor decision-making and a failure to anticipate potential problems.

Another blind spot is limited industry contacts. It's not enough to have a great product; founders need to know the right people to help them get their device to market. Without an established network, it can be difficult to get the attention of investors, customers, and industry experts.

Technical founders also have a tendency to view everything as a technical problem that they can solve. While technical expertise is certainly important, it's not the only factor that determines the success of a medical device company. Neglecting other aspects of the business, such as marketing, sales, and finance, can be a fatal mistake.

Ignoring the adage of 'you don't know what you don't know' is another blind spot that technical founders often fall victim to. It's easy to become overconfident in one's own knowledge and abilities, but this can lead to overlooking important details and blind spots.

Finally, many technical founders believe that their device is so unique that it will sell itself and attract investors easily. This is simply not the case. Even the best products need a well-executed marketing strategy to succeed.

To address these blind spots, technical founders need to be willing to seek out and listen to the advice of outsiders. They need to build relationships with industry experts, hire experienced business professionals, and be open to constructive criticism.

In conclusion, while technical expertise is important, it's not enough to guarantee success in the medical device industry. Technical founders need to be aware of their blind spots and be willing to seek out help from those who can fill in the gaps in their knowledge and experience. By doing so, they can increase their chances of success and bring their innovative medical devices to market.
